Our work on “A Balancing Act” has generated questions as to whether the model can be used to evaluate levels and progression in skills acquired through workplace experience. Additionally, it’s essential to keep in mind that personal qualities and skills may overlap extensively; therefore, being too rigid in trying to differentiate them may distract from its purpose of providing more accurate descriptions of skills.

An increasing focus has been put on the dynamic component of the Balancing Act Model. It is vitally important that it accurately represents how skills develop over time and that it can be tailored to an individual’s particular learning journey. Furthermore, its relevance must also extend outside its initial place of learning.
Trials will aim to demonstrate that ‘A Balancing Act’ tool is well suited for making work-based learning more visible for both those who have acquired skills as well as those seeking guidance about their careers. According to the jury’s justification for awarding the VPL Prize, this method provides a way of connecting professional experience and academic study in one cohesive framework.
Elverum Folkehogskole will conduct a wider trial using the “A Balancing Act” concept as an appropriate means for documenting pupils’ skills related to its primary statutory function of fostering people’s general education and knowledge (SS1).
